The first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve site in the Maldives, Baa Atoll, is home to the Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort, which just announced the completion of a new solar project that would reduce environmental impact and save electricity.
The resort is fortunate to have a tropical environment all year round. In order to take advantage of this, they developed the solar panel project, which would cause the property to use 135,000 less litres of diesel yearly, saving 361,800 kg of carbon emissions – the equivalent of 16,400 planted trees.
The 650 new solar panels, which are tucked away in a quiet area of the island, generate about six hours of electricity per day. By using this renewable energy source instead of fossil fuels, the resort will save more than $135,000 USD.
The endeavour represents The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort’s dedication to mitigating its ecological impact. They have a food composting system for managing food waste, and the resort uses this byproduct in its gardens. With the help of their creative bottle crusher, broken glasses and bottles may now be used as umbrella bases for the villas.
General Manager at The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort, Vijay Kumar, commented, “As an island resort, sustainability is key, and we are committed to creating solutions to minimise the impact we have on this beautiful ecosystem. The new panels will serve to harness the sunshine we are blessed with in the Maldives and reduce our reliance on energy sources such as diesel.” We at Splendid Asia and MadlyMaldives look forward to see how the rest of the resorts follow suit in this commendable act.
