With the delivery of specialized vehicles to accelerate this transformation of urban waste management, backed by The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives, Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) marked a significant step towards the management of plastic waste.
Two electric vehicles (EVs) were among the six cars that UNDP Maldives formally turned over to WAMCO in March 2024 as part of a program to improve waste management in the Greater Male’ Area (GMA). This acquisition, made possible by the financial assistance of TCCF, opens the door to a significant development in enhancing PET collecting activities and addressing the issue of plastic waste in the Maldives.
The country’s aim to transition to renewable energy is greatly aided by the government’s goal to incorporate renewable energy in important areas like trash management, which is why UNDP Maldives is continuing to help it by providing electric cars. The Maldives may get closer to reaching its renewable energy targets and lessen its carbon footprint by using clean energy solutions like electric cars in trash management procedures.
The Coca-Cola Foundation and the stakeholders want to get the Maldives closer to a day when plastic circularity is actively sought for rather than only imagined. TCCF has significantly improved and drawn investment to the vital waste management industry in the Maldives by directing resources and expertise into its core. This program demonstrates TCCF’s dedication to encouraging environmentally friendly behaviors and the reuse and recycling of plastics, which lessens their negative effects on the environment and helps to establish a circular economy.
The fleet handover event held on March 18, 2024, served as a celebration of collaboration in waste management. Representatives from UNDP Maldives, WAMCO, The Coca-Cola Foundation, government officials, and stakeholders came together to mark this significant step and reinforced their collective dedication to building a more sustainable future for the Maldives.
