UK tourism would be a big boost to Addu Atoll, the southernmost part of the Maldives and a former British colony, according to Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal. Addressing the Destination Addu 2024 symposium, which marked the beginning of work to create an all-encompassing city brand for Addu Atoll, Faisal underlined the historical significance of the city and the necessity of branding in order to raise it in the international tourism market.
Faisal brought attention to the heritage ministry’s initiatives to restore British-era sites in Addu Atoll and their continued presence as tourist destinations. Addu Atoll holds quite a significance for both history and tourism so it would be nothing but beneficial to see the positive outcome of this endeavour. The minister announced that the Addu City Council will be attending the World Travel Market (WTM) expo in the United Kingdom, with a special emphasis on the British market to increase UK tourism.
Faisal emphasised that the brand will reflect the culture, goals, and potential of the tourist sector in the area and reiterated the support of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) for marketing tourism in Addu Atoll. The minister also emphasised how crucial it is to start direct flights to Addu Atoll in order to support resort operationalisation and boost local tourism growth.
