Thoriq Ibrahim was named head of the newly established Ministry of Tourism and Environment after President Mohamed Muizzu combined the Ministries of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy and Tourism on Saturday.
The President’s Office hosted the appointment ceremony on 1st February 2025.
Thoriq Ibrahim took his oath of office before Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan before starting his new position. President Muizzu gave him his ministry appointment letter after the oath.
Thoriq Ibrahim and President Muizzu met following the official appointment. The president emphasized throughout their conversation the strategic value of marketing the Maldives using an integrated strategy that emphasizes the benefits of the country’s tourism industry and environmental heritage.
After the ministries merged, Thoriq Ibrahim, who was named Minister of Tourism and Environment on Saturday, said he will concentrate on enhancing cooperation between the two fields.
The appointment comes after Ibrahim Faisal, the former minister of tourism, was fired and the Tourism Ministry and Environment Ministry were merged.
According to Thoriq, the tourism and environmental industries may work well together with a single strategy, he told state media PSM on Saturday.
“I will work to improve the current efforts in both sectors and aim to develop tourism in a way that benefits all stakeholders,” he said.
The minister added that combining environmental and tourist activities will make it easier to coordinate efforts on important topics.
On Tuesday, Ibrahim Faisal, the Maldives’ Minister of Tourism, was unceremoniously dismissed from office. His removal was not formally explained by the President’s Office.
