On 22nd April, Angsana Velavaru Maldives, an all-inclusive luxury resort tucked away in South Nilandhe Atoll and a prominent proponent of environmental conservation in the Maldives, commemorated Earth Day with a range of noteworthy events. The resort held a number of events to promote responsible behaviour and raise awareness, emphasising its commitment to sustainability. Since its founding in 1970, Earth Day has been an annual occasion to show support for environmental conservation. It is organised worldwide by EARTHDAY.ORG.
The event kicked off with the interactive breakfast pancake station at Kaani Restaurant with the debut of “SustainLinen: Apron Collection.” The linens, which formerly decorated the resort’s villas and offered visitors comfort, were recycled rather than thrown away, signifying a significant change.
The Green Sustainability Team, which is made up of committed employees from different resort departments and has a shared goal for a more sustainable and greener future, launched the “SustainLinen Tote Bag with Purpose” to resort employees in July 2023. The goal of this project was to reduce plastic waste by providing an environmentally suitable substitute for single-use plastic bags. The team has expanded its endeavour to include nearby towns and overnight visitors since September 2023. The resort’s talented tailors created thirty tote bags out of abandoned beach umbrellas in honour of Earth Day, which they gave to visitors.
Neil Firman, the executive assistant manager for food and beverage at Angsana Velavaru Maldives, conducted a tree planting session at 10:00 am that resulted in the planting of 77 trees. From 11:00 am to 12:15 pm, the reef was cleaned up. In the process of cleaning up, 14 volunteers pulled out 25 Pin Cushion Sea Stars, protecting the priceless corals that beautify the underwater world.
From 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, children participated in bracelet-making classes at the Ranger’s Club, where they used recycled fishing nets to make fashionable accessories. In addition to encouraging creativity, this practical exercise emphasised the significance of recycling and lowering marine pollution. Families also participated in an island cleaning from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. Working together, they made sure the island would always be a safe haven for visitors and the surrounding ecology.
When it comes to a number of best practices that support its sustainable path, Angsana Velavaru Maldives leads by example:
