The exciting “Visit Maldives Hackathon,” organized by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives) in collaboration with Dhiraagu, SparkHub LLP, PSM, BCC, MOTE, and NCIT, is open to both domestic and foreign participants who are at least 18 years old. The Honorable Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, officially opened the hackathon at the Dhiraagu Head Office on February 27, 2025. The primary audience for this hackathon, which is now accepting registrations, is anyone interested in fusing sustainability and technology in the travel sector.
The purpose of the 48-hour Visit Maldives Hackathon is to find creative, tech-driven solutions to the major problems facing the Maldivian tourism sector. It supports Visit Maldives’ mission to promote eco-friendly travel while leveraging cutting-edge technology to improve visitor experiences and operational effectiveness. Participants had access to information sessions on 13th March, 19th March and 7th April. The deadline for proposals from participants is 11th April 2025. The day following the submission deadline, proposals will be evaluated, and on 13th April, the proposals chosen for the Hackathon will be made public. The actual event is scheduled for 18th April 2025 to 20th April 2025.
The Honourable Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, told the crowd during the formal launching ceremony, “The ideas developed here [at this hackathon] will not remain inside these walls. The innovations you create can shape the way we welcome guests, the way we manage our industry, the way we preserve our natural environment while enhancing visitor experiences.“
“I am confident that with the bright ideas generated while working together, we can build a stronger and more diverse tourism sector in the Maldives. We are hopeful that it will be a strong positive step towards the growth of tech-driven solutions for tourism-related challenges,“ Ibrahim Shiuree, the CEO and MD of MMPRC, highlighted in his remarks at the inaugural event.
