In comparison to the same period in 2024, tourist arrivals in the Maldives increased by 11% in the first month of this year. A total of 214,864 tourists came to the Maldives in January 2025, exceeding the 192,385 arrivals in January 2024, according to data given by the Tourism Ministry on 3rd February 2025.
The country’s tourism industry is off to a great start as the Ministry of Tourism announced that 233,457 tourists arrivals have been recorded in total for the year as of February 2nd, 2025.
With 69.9% of all tourists choosing resort lodging, the bulk of tourists came to the Maldives to stay at upscale resorts. Other lodging choices made by travelers included:
- Guesthouses: 25.2%
- City hotels: 2.5%
- People going on safari: 2.3%

With 39,887 visitors so far this year, China continues to be the Maldives’ largest source market. This is consistent with the pattern from the previous year, when China had the most arrivals. Other significant contributions to the Maldives’ tourism industry, after China, are:
- Russia: 23,512 visitors
- Italy: 22,162 visitors
- British Columbia: 20,577 visitors
- Germany: 13,653 visitors
In order to surpass the 2 million tourists that visited the Maldives this year, the administration has set the lofty goal of drawing 2.2 million tourists in 2025.
