A unique and significant occasion to Ellaidhoo Maldives occurred on the first morning of the new year. Three small turtles broke out of their shells on the island’s coastlines and followed their instincts to the Indian Ocean. This occasion, which marked the beginning of the year with a special connection to nature, was witnessed by both guests and workers.
Under the direction of Tharushi Pitigala, the resort’s marine biology staff took care of the eggs, which had been placed weeks previously. The eggs were safeguarded under their cautious gaze to guarantee the hatchlings’ safe arrival. With frequent updates from the crew, guests kept a close eye on the progress. Thinking back on that moment, Tharushi stated, “Seeing them emerge and instinctively head towards the sea is nothing short of miraculous. Each turtle plays a vital role in sustaining the ocean’s delicate ecosystems, from maintaining healthy seagrass beds to supporting coral reef biodiversity.”
As more hatchlings emerged in the days that followed, visitors returned to see them make their way into the water. Every appearance strengthened the bond between the island and the sea life it supports.
Through reef monitoring and coral propagation, Ellaidhoo Maldives has long promoted marine conservation. Because of these efforts, marine life, especially the green and hawksbill turtles that live on the island, can thrive.
These kinds of incidents highlight how important it is to preserve marine ecosystems. The hatching of these turtles serves as a reminder of the constant need to protect the waters and the life they support at Ellaidhoo Maldives.
