The Maldives is making great efforts to develop its tourism industry, hoping to draw four million tourists annually and generate $7 billion in income. These tourism goals were presented by Ibrahim Faisal, the Minister of Tourism, who emphasized the government’s emphasis on the sector’s expansion.
Minister Faisal stated that the government intends to raise tourism-related revenue and is actively pursuing that objective. “We are determined to increase our income from tourism. If our plans are successful, we expect to see the number of annual tourists rise by 3.5 million to four million over the next five years”, the Minister stated.
Present estimates place the Maldives’ visitor arrivals at two million for this year—a substantial increase over the 1.8 million expected in 2023. Compared to the same period last year, the country has received 1.4 million tourists thus far in 2024, a 9.6% rise.
Minister Faisal emphasized the vital role that tourism plays in the Maldivian economy, pointing out that the industry currently generates over $4.5 billion in revenue yearly. “We believe that with strategic planning and execution, we can elevate this figure to $7 billion by the end of our term,” he added.
