The lagoon at the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort has received official recognition as an Important Shark & Ray Area (ISRA), along with Maamunagau and Fenfushi.
This honor comes after the resort’s continuous partnership with the Manta Trust, one of the world’s preeminent organizations for manta ray conservation and study. This accomplishment is the result of the on-site team’s extensive study, which has earned the lagoon international recognition as a manta ray habitat and a top priority for conservation efforts. This certification is the result of years of scientific investigation and data collection funded by the resort; it is a first step toward putting protective measures in place in the surrounding area. The Manta Trust is working to designate the region as a Marine Protected Area (MPA), and this declaration is just one aspect of their larger campaign.
In 2019, InterContinental Maldives established its first partnership with the Manta Trust, seeing the exceptional potential of its proximity to a recently uncovered juvenile reef manta ray feeding habitat. Reef manta rays inhabit the seas surrounding the resort in huge and healthy numbers, offering Manta Trust researchers an unrivaled opportunity to study these amazing animals. InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort opened in 2019 and has been showcasing top-tier hospitality since its inception and is located in Raa Atoll.
