Maldives Tourism has flourished ever since the launch of the first luxury resort in the Maldives (in 1972). The arrival of the first tourist group is estimated to be in February 1972. The group landed at Male', the capital island of Maldives and after spending 12 days of ultimate bliss returned to their homes with unforgettable memories.

Tourism in Maldives started with just two resorts with a capacity of about 280 beds. At present there are over 80 resorts located in the different atolls constituting the Republic of Maldives. Over the past few decades, the number of tourists in Maldives has risen continuously with the arrival of the 600,000th tourist being celebrated in the year 2004.


The resorts in Maldives have in a major way contributed to the rise in tourism in Maldives. Each resort being an island in itself has its own electricity, water and waste disposal facilities. The resorts have been constructed and developed keeping in mind all the standards and guidelines laid down by the tourism ministry./ All the construction and development in the resorts have been done keeping in view the natural beauty and without disturbing the delicate balance / eco-system of the place.
