Visa Guidelines for Persons of Indian Origin

What is
a PIO Card
|
| |
|
PIO Card is a special facility
given only to incoming travelers in India apart from the visa.
This scheme was introduced from 31st March 1999 keeping in
mind the need for Indians to be close to their place of origin.

| |
|
Who
can avail it
|
| |
|
|
Those who, at any time
held an Indian Passport.
|
|
|
|
Those who or whose parents,
grandparents or great grandparents was born as a permanent
resident of India as defined in the Government of India,1935
and other territories that became a part of India thereafter.
|
|
|
|
A spouse of a Indian
citizen or Person of Indian Origin.
|
|
|

|
How
you can benefit
|
| |
|
|
You would not require a visa for visiting
India. |
|
|
|
You can excuse yourself from requirements
of registration if stay in India does not exceed 180 days
(but will be required within 30 days of the expiry of
180 days with the concerned Foreigners Registration Officer
at the district level.) |
|
|
|
You can avail the facilities that a non-resident
Indian enjoys in economic, financial and educational fee
structures. |
|
|
|
All facilities would be offered in the
matter of acquisition, holding, transfer and disposal
of immovable properties in India except in matters relating
to the acquisition of agricultural / plantation properties.
|
|
|
|
All facilities available to children of
NRIs for getting admission to educational institutions
in India including medical colleges, engineering colleges,
Institutes of Technology, Institutes of Management etc.
under the general category will be applicable. |
|
|
|
Facilities available under the various
housing schemes of LIC, State Governments and other Government
agencies are also open. |
|

How to
apply
|
| |
|
|
You will be required to apply
to an Indian mission in the country where you are originally
a resident. |
|
|
If you are already in India
on a long term visa (more than one year) you will have
to contact the following - |

Validity
|
| |
|
Your PIO Card is valid for
20 years as long as it is accompanied with a valid passport.
|

What to
pay
|
| |
|
The fee for the PIO card is
USD 1000 which is inclusive of USD 250 (non-refundable) as
processing fees payable at the time of this application.
